Content of the Webinar:

This pre-recorded webinar focuses on common terminology relating to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, research, statistics, and the application of specific PREA standards pertaining to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people in confinement.

This 50-minute webinar is designed to be used as a tool to train staff, volunteers, contractors, etc. on understanding LGBTI inmates, residents, and detainees. The webinar can be viewed in segments or as a whole - whichever would best suit your training needs.

Who Should Listen: 

This webinar is open to all corrections and detention professionals, juvenile justice professionals, law enforcement personnel, community-based organizations, advocates, and medical and mental health providers.

Making Connections: Linking Community Confinement and Sexual Assault Response Teams

In this webinar, the presenters discuss Partnering with Community Sexual Assault Response Teams: A Guide for Community Confinement and Juvenile Detention Facilities, a resource guide funded by the Office for Victims of Crime and developed by The Vera Institute of Justice, following a 3-year partnership with the Johnson County, Kansas Department of Corrections.

This webinar focuses on how community confinement facilities can leverage existing community expertise to respond to incidents of sexual abuse, namely by creating partnerships with community sexual assault response teams (SARTs).

Vera project lead Allison Hastings and Adult Residential Center Director Antonio Booker (one of two facilities operated by the Johnson County Department of Corrections) walk participants through key aspects of the planning tool included in the guide, discuss how using this guide will aid compliance with PREA standards, and share lessons learned from the pilot project.

Featured on this webinar are James Kenney, PREA Coordinator at the Osceola Corrections in Florida (County Jail) and Erica Bravo, PREA Manager at the Santa Clara County California Sheriffs’ Office (County Jail). These presenters will discuss their first steps as they began their PREA implementation process, what challenges they experienced and how these challenges were resolved, and tips they have to support success for jails across the country.  The Webinar ends with a question and answer session.
