Reimagining PREA Risk Assessments

Join the PREA Resource Center to hear from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections on how they used their federal PREA demonstration grant to revise and attempt to validate their PREA risk assessment. This presentation will review the detailed data analysis that the project completed so agency researchers are encouraged to attend. Presenters will also share lessons learned, including from the pilot assessments where it was determined that there was a mismatch between the questions asked and people’s responses. This will be a technical presentation, but one that will give agencies a head start on strengthening their PREA risk assessments.

In this webinar, Allison Hastings from Activating Change will provide an overview of disability, incarceration, and sexual victimization and discuss access considerations that can increase sexual safety for autistic people in custody. Identifying and offering treatment to inmates with prior victimization is intended to address immediate mental health needs. Identifying Identifying and offering a follow-up meeting with a mental health practitioner to prior abusers has the potential to reduce future incidents of sexual abuse and create an improved overall sense of safety within a facility.

During this webinar, we cover PREA Standard 115.86 Sexual Abuse Incident Reviews. The sexual abuse incident review, which is conducted at the conclusion of every substantiated and unsubstantiated sexual abuse investigation, is intended to evaluate whether any changes in policy or practice at the facility need to be made in light of the alleged incident. The incident review process is intended to allow the facility to identify systemic problems in policies, practices, dynamics, physical barriers, staffing levels, and monitoring that may have contributed to an incident or allegation of sexual abuse, so that the facility can improve conditions to avoid future incidents or allegations.
