To help agencies achieve compliance with the National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape, the Vera Institute of Justice, in conjunction with the National PREA Resource Center (PRC), has developed the following guidelines to screen for risk of sexual victimization and for abusiveness, including questions to be asked of inmates, residents, and detainees, and the best use of the information from the screening to inform housing decisions.
On September 4, 2003, President George W. Bush signed into law the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (P.L. 108-79). The legislation requires the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to develop a new national data collection on the incidence and prevalence of sexual assault within correctional facilities. This report updates Implementing the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, dated February 5, 2004.
