The Vera Institute of Justice, in collaboration with the National PREA Resource Center, presents a webinar on committing to a culture of safety and respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) youth and adults in correctional institutions. In this webinar, Lorie Brisbin, a National Institute of Corrections correctional program specialist, will discuss the importance of having strong policies and practices geared toward keeping LGBTI adults and youth safe. Anne Elwart, probation manager at the William F. James Boys Ranch in Santa Clara County, California, and an adult jail representative will discuss steps their agencies have taken to create cultures of safety and respect for LGBTI people in their custody.

The Clock Is Ticking: The Who, When, and How of Jail Audits

This webinar will focus on general aspect of audits including an overview of the audit cycle timeline, what to do if audits are not completed within the prescribed cycle year, who can be auditors, the training and certification process, recommendations for negotiating a contract with potential auditors (including legal issues related to audits), and how agencies can arrange audits through circular agreements.

This webinar focuses on the legal liability of agencies and staff when engaging in cross gender supervision and searches of people in custody. During the webinar, Prof. Smith will: (1) review the legal issues involved in cross gender supervision and searches including the national PREA Standards and applicable state and federal laws; (2) illustrate legal liability in different settings and scenarios using case law decisions; (3) discuss different elements of liability for municipalities, officials, individuals and staff; and (4) identify steps agencies can take to address potential liability.
